Five Night Kitchen

Use what you have

Measure small couscous before hydrating it for a tray or one-pot meal

Small dried couscous can absorb hot liquid while another part of dinner finishes. Plan the dry amount and check the product’s method first; a larger pasta sold under a similar name may need a different cooking process.

Measure the part you can use

These recipes use dry small couscous before water is added. The selected roast bowl, cauliflower tray and one-pot dinner need 160g, 140g and 160g for two servings each: 460g total. A 300g supply leaves a 160g gap. With an example 500g purchase, 340g remains dry after covering it. Do not replace the dry amount with the equal weight of a previously hydrated bowl.

Choose the texture you want

Fluffy grains below a roast

The lemon chickpea dinner hydrates couscous separately while vegetables roast. Use the packet ratio, keep the covered rest and fluff gently. This lets the grain stay separate from liquid released by the tray rather than absorbing an unpredictable puddle.

A base under cauliflower and tahini

The cauliflower tray also keeps the grain separate from its topping. Make the tahini sauce using that recipe’s instructions, then add it at serving. It is not part of the water used to hydrate the dry couscous.

Grains finished in the vegetable pot

The one-pot recipe first softens its carrots and other vegetables. It then heats the chickpeas and liquid before adding couscous and removing the pot from the heat. Adding the grains before the hard vegetables are tender changes what can finish during that short rest.

When the result is not quite right

If the packet requires boiling rather than a covered off-heat rest, choose a recipe designed for that product instead of relying on this recipe’s timing. If suitable small couscous is still dry in the center, use the recipe’s small hot-water adjustment and rest again rather than pouring in an unmeasured large volume.

Allocate your couscous

Choose dinners in the list below. Stock is assigned in that order; any shortfall remains visible. This only totals couscous, so check every full recipe for its other ingredients and method.

The week opens with its own saved settings. Add your stock there to deduct it from the full shopping list.

Keep and prepare your stock

Keep unused dry couscous as its package directs. Hydrated grains and the roast or bean components follow the complete dinner’s storage plan. Store and label actual prepared portions separately from the dry cupboard balance.

Avoid this mix-up

Ordinary wheat couscous is not a gluten-free swap for rice. Check the actual product and the planner’s exclusions; equal grams alone do not establish an appropriate substitution.

Use the storage guide for prepared batches, and follow actual product labels. Our recipe and quantity checks are not a real cooking trial.
