Use what you have

Use canned tomatoes as sauce, cooking liquid and a soup base

For these recipes, tomatoes and their can juices belong together. A thick egg sauce, a lentil pot and a pepper soup use that moisture differently, so choose the method before draining or reducing the can.

Measure the part you can use

Weigh the edible canned tomato contents including their juices when the recipe gives no draining instruction. The selected egg sauce, lentil soup and pepper soup need 400g, 400g and 200g for two servings each. Two 400g cans supply 800g, leaving 200g short. Tomato paste, plain juice and fresh tomato chunks are not equal-weight replacements for this mixed tomato-and-juice ingredient.

Choose the texture you want

A sauce that supports eggs

Pepper and tomato eggs reduces the tomatoes until a spoon leaves a brief gap in the sauce. Do this before adding eggs. A watery base lets eggs float and spreads the whites; extra cooking after the eggs go in is a different correction with a different result.

Moisture for a lentil soup

Keep the lentil soup’s measured tomato and water amounts, and follow its order of cooking. Draining the can first removes liquid the recipe expects. If the soup thickens before the lentils are tender, use its stated liquid adjustment rather than treating every tomato product as identical.

A smaller addition to pepper soup

The roasted pepper and white bean soup uses less canned tomato because the pepper, beans and measured water supply much of its body. Do not empty a larger can into it simply to avoid a remainder; reserve usable contents separately and give them a realistic storage plan.

When the result is not quite right

If an egg sauce is loose, reduce it at the sauce stage. If a soup is thick, check its recipe’s liquid step instead of adding more tomato paste. Read the product form on the can: whole tomatoes may need breaking up, while an already concentrated paste needs a different recipe.

Allocate your canned tomatoes

Choose dinners in the list below. Stock is assigned in that order; any shortfall remains visible. This only totals canned tomatoes, so check every full recipe for its other ingredients and method.

The week opens with its own saved settings. Add your stock there to deduct it from the full shopping list.

Keep and prepare your stock

Keep opened unused canned tomatoes in a covered container in the refrigerator. Food Hero recommends using opened canned tomatoes within two days; follow an earlier label limit where relevant. Opening another can does not reset the age of an older portion you combine with it.

Avoid this mix-up

Canned tomatoes are not drained beans. Do not apply the bean can example of 400g gross and 240g drained to tomatoes, and do not count the same can again after assigning it to a prepared recipe.

Use the storage guide for prepared batches, and follow actual product labels. Our recipe and quantity checks are not a real cooking trial.
